Congratulations! You have just found out you are pregnant. Regular medical monitoring is essential to protect your health and your baby's throughout the nine months of pregnancy.
Why is pregnancy monitoring important?
Regular check-ups allow potential complications to be detected early, the baby's growth to be tracked, and delivery to be prepared under the best possible conditions. Monitoring includes scheduled medical consultations as well as laboratory and imaging examinations.
The month-by-month monitoring calendar
First trimester (months 1 to 3)
The first appointment should ideally take place before the end of the third month. It covers: pregnancy confirmation, full blood panel, due date calculation, infectious disease screening, and prescription of necessary supplements (folic acid, iodine).
The first-trimester ultrasound (between 11 and 13 weeks) accurately dates the pregnancy, checks foetal viability, and screens for Down syndrome (trisomy 21).
Second trimester (months 4 to 6)
Monthly consultations are recommended throughout this trimester. The morphological ultrasound (between 20 and 25 weeks) is the most comprehensive scan: it examines all of the baby's organs.
Third trimester (months 7 to 9)
Consultations become fortnightly and then weekly towards the end of pregnancy. The third-trimester ultrasound (between 30 and 35 weeks) assesses the baby's growth and position.
